Topographical Trans-PRK

Conventional teaching is that laser eye surgery is not safe in patients with keratoconus. However, PRK laser eye surgery can be used to treat the “topography” or abnormal curvature of the cornea in keratoconus.

A topographical Trans-PRK is usually performed 6 months after corneal cross linking has been performed to further rehabilitate a keratoconic cornea

How does a Topographical Trans-PRK work?

• The Mel 90 is used to painlessly and precisely remove the cornea’s surface cells
• Once the surface layer is removed the irregular surface is treated by the laser.
• The laser creates a regular cornea
• The vision can be significantly improved with glasses following the laser

Advantages of a Topographical Trans-PRK

• The patient’s cornea becomes regular and the keratoconus itself is treated
• The whole procedure is painless
• In some cases the uncorrected vision improves to 6/6
• The patient retains their own cornea
• The patient ‘s corrected vision improves with glasses in all cases
