Keratoconus
Keratoconus is a degenerative disorder of the cornea which causes thinning and eventual bulging of the affected tissue. The cornea becomes irregular which makes it impossible to fully correct vision with glasses. In order to see properly patients have to wear uncomfortable hard contact lenses and some even need a corneal transplant.
At Crystal Eye and Laser Centre we endeavour to treat the cornea in such a way that the vision can be fully corrected with glasses.
We go out of our way to help patients with keratoconus retain their own corneas so they do not have to undergo corneal transplantation
Treatment Options for Keratoconus
Corneal Collagen Cross-linking
Corneal Collagen Cross-linking or CXL is a minimally invasive procedure that is used to harden a cornea with ultra-violet light and riboflavin pigment to prevent further progression of keratoconus.
Topographical Trans-PRK
Conventional teaching is that laser eye surgery is not safe in patients with keratoconus. However, PRK laser eye surgery can be used to treat the “topography” or abnormal curvature of the cornea in keratoconus.
A topographical Trans-PRK is usually performed 6 months after corneal cross linking has been performed to further rehabilitate a keratoconic cornea
Each treatment plan is personalised and is extremely sophisticated in its planning on our laser software.
Corneal Allogenic Intrastromal Ring Segments Keratoplasty
(CAIRS)
Corneal Allogenic Intrastromal Ring Segments of CAIRS keratoplasty is the latest and most advanced corneal sparing operation for keratoconus.
Crystal Eye and Laser Centre is the pioneer of this procedure in Perth and Western Australia. We have performed the first and most amount of CAIRS keratoplasty procedures in WA.
In CAIRS keratoplasty highly specialised and customised and accurate tunnels are created in the keratoconic cornea by the
Visumax 800 Femtosecond laser.
Prepared corneal transplant tissue in the shape of half circles are then placed in the prepared tunnels.
The extra corneal transplant tissue works twofold:
• It flattens the steep cone and causes a regularisation of the keratoconic cornea
• It bulks up the thinned out part of the cornea that bulges in keratoconus
