Corneal Collagen Cross-Linking
Corneal Collagen Cross-linking or CXL is a minimally invasive procedure that is used to harden a cornea with ultra-violet light and riboflavin pigment to prevent further progression of keratoconus.
How Does CXL Work?
- The procedure is office based and takes 20 minutes.
- It is completely painless
- Riboflavin pigment drops is applied to the affected cornea for at least 10 minutes
- An ultra-violet light is then shone on the eye for at least 10 minutes
- The riboflavin and UV light reacts to harden the cornea preventing progression

- The patient’s cornea becomes stable making keratoconus progression unlikely
- The whole procedure is painless
- In some cases the uncorrected vision improves
- The patient retains their own cornea
- The patient maintains their vision corrected by glasses
